Diu is one of the India’s untouched pearl. Like Daman and Goa, Diu was a Portuguese colony until taken over by India in 1961. Along with Daman, it is still governed from New Delhi as a Union Territory rather than as a part of Gujarat. The former colony includes the island of Diu itself, about 11 Kms long by three Kms wide, separated from the coast by a narrow channel. There are also two tiny mainland enclaves.

We reached Diu in the morning and first of all hunted for our resort. Although I had done my homework for the accommodation but wanted to confirm the difference between virtual world and real world of hotels. After lots of back and forth visits along Ghoghla and Nagoa beach, we settled down at Ghoghla beach facing property – Sugati Beach Resort which was actually my choice through virtual hunt.

After resting for a while, we started our sightseeing trip. Although it was quiet late but we tried our luck.

Various tourist attractions in Diu are the Diu Fort, Fortress of Panikota, Nagoa Beach, St. Paul’s Church, Jallandhar Shrine, Gangeshwar Temple, Diu Museum, Ghoghla Beach and Gomtimata Beach. We selected few sites for the evening.

1. Diu Fort was an awesome structure for which I have written a separate article. It was distinctly visible from far by the sea.

2.Nagoa beach is a famous beach in Diu. Located in the Nagoa hamlet of the Bucharwada village, this beach stretches about 2 km from one end to the other. Many hotels are around Nagoa beach. Sea can be seen from hotel’s windows and terraces.  There is market available for food and toys for kids. It reminded me of Juhu Chaupati. However, beach here was much neat and clean with less population around. Views were serene, so we enjoyed.

3. St. Paul’s Church

A structure in white stood in front as a symbol of peace and calmness. The very sight of the church was soothing. We spent few minutes there.

4. Naida Caves

Naida Caves are situated outside the city wall. These caves are dark hollows with roots of trees seem to have taken all over the placs and steps leading off into nowhere. This is where the Portuguese hacked out their building materials. It was a scary site. Very dark and eerie. I was even afraid to step down. Thought, it would be full of bats. I actually started visualizing a horror movie. Having little kids in hands, we quickly got away from the site and drove ahead. Naida caves can be very interesting for people who like adventure. Although I like adventure but never take chance when kids are around.

5. Vanakbara

Vanakbara is a fascinating little fishing village. It is great to wander around the port, packed with colorful fishing boats and bustling activity. It is best to watch this place at 9 AM when the fishing fleet returns and sells off its catch. Although the place was having fish smell, but it was interesting to see such big boats.

6. Ghoghla Beach

Ghoghla Beach is one of the most beautiful beach in Diu. This beach also offers various water sports facilities like parasailing etc.

Other beaches

Some of the other beaches within the easy reach of the Diu Town are Jallandhar, Chakratirth and the stunning Sunset Point. These beaches are very popular among the foreign tourists.

Insider Tips while visiting Diu

1. A hired cab for the full Diu Trip is worth taking as you would love to visit the market and enjoy the nature hassle free

2. Buy water and eatables from standard shops.

3. Must stay for two nights at Diu. Hotels are not that expensive whereas you get beautiful beaches and good food at economical rates.

4. Bargaining is a good option

5. Last but not the least, since I am a nature lover, 90% of my trip was made because of the hotel we chose. Our room had a sea facing balcony and we enjoyed every moment there.
